3) Familie Joseph Strauss - Kolonialwarenhandlung, Fuldaer Straße 8 (heute Gartenstraße 1)
Die Familie Strauss stammte väterlicherseits aus Rothenkirchen. Dort waren ihre Vorfahren seit Jahrhunderten ansässig gewesen. Als 1906 die Auflösung der Synagogengemeinde Rothenkirchen bevorstand, kaufte Abraham Strauss ein Haus in der Fuldaerstraße in Hünfeld, um dort ein Kolonialwarengeschäft einzurichten. Schon Abrahams Vater, der Seifensieder und Handelsmann Joseph Strauss (*1818), hatte den Handelsbetrieb 1843 in Rothenkirchen gegründet. Abraham Strauss (*1856) und Ehefrau Emilie geb. Kaufherr (*1858 in Lütter) hatten fünf Kinder: Berta (*1887), Julie (*1889), Meta (*1891), Paula (*1893) und Joseph (*1895). 1907 zog die Familie dann nach Hünfeld. Die Töchter verließen Hünfeld nach ihrer Heirat, Joseph sollte einmal das Geschäft übernehmen.
Nachdem Joseph Strauss die Volksschulzeit abgeschlossen hatte, stieg er in das Geschäft seines Vaters ein. Als der erste Weltkrieg kam (1914-1918) wurde Joseph Soldat und Vater Abraham musste in dieser Zeit das Geschäft allein führen. Glücklicherweise kehrte Joseph gesund aus dem Krieg heim, sodass im Lauf der Folgejahre das Geschäft erweitert und ein neuer Ladentrakt angebaut werden konnte. Zum Einzelhandel, der weiter unter dem Namen Abraham Strauss firmierte, kam der Großhandel unter dem Firmennamen Joseph Strauss hinzu. Nachdem die Eltern gestorben waren (Mutter Emilie 1922 und Vater Abraham 1927), oblag Joseph die alleinige Leitung der Firma.
Im März 1924 hatte er die junge Lilly Wertheim (*1903) geheiratet, Tochter des Handelsmannes Isaac Wertheim und seiner Ehefrau Frieda geb. Wertheim in Naumburg. Lilly und Joseph Strauss bekamen in Hünfeld drei Kinder:
Emilie (*23.3.1827)
Alfred (*26.5.1930)
Gertrud (*1.11.1934).
Die Kaufmannsfamilie Strauss war sowohl bei Juden wie bei Christen sehr geachtet und angesehen. Alle Leute des südlichen Stadtteils kauften im Laden Strauss ein. Als Großhändler belieferte Joseph auch die kleinen Geschäfte in den umliegenden Dörfern. Er kaufte die Waren en gros und bewahrte sie in seinen Lagerräumen auf. Die Kunden holten dann die bestellte Ware bei ihm ab. Die gesamte Büroarbeit erledigte Frau Strauss, die in besonderen Stoßzeiten wie im Sommer beim An- und Verkauf der Heidelbeeren, auch im Laden half. Zu ihrer Entlastung wurde eine Hausgehilfin, zeitweise auch ein Kindermädchen eingestellt. Im Laden war stets eine Verkäuferin beschäftigt – zuerst Marianne Winkler, dann bis 1938 Luise Bodesheim, "Josephs rechte Hand", die nach ihrer Heirat als Frau Breitung nach Friesenhausen in der Rhön zog.
3) The Joseph Strauss Family - gocery store, "Fuldaer Strasse" 8 (nowadays "Gartenstraße" # 1)
The Strauss family originated on the father’s side from Rothenkirchen, where their ancestors had lived for centuries. When the dissolution of the Rothenkirchen Jewish community was imminent in 1906, Abraham Strauss bought a house on Fuldaerstraße in Hünfeld to establish a grocery business there. Abraham’s father, the soap maker and merchant Joseph Strauss (*1818), had founded the trading business in Rothenkirchen in 1843. Abraham Strauss (*1856) and his wife Emilie, née Kaufherr (*1858 in Lütter), had five children: Berta (*1887), Julie (*1889), Meta (*1891), Paula (*1893), and Joseph (*1895). In 1907, the family moved to Hünfeld. The daughters left Hünfeld after their marriages, and Joseph was expected to take over the business one day.
After completing elementary school, Joseph Strauss joined his father’s business. When the First World War broke out (1914–1918), Joseph became a soldier, and his father Abraham had to run the business alone during that time. Fortunately, Joseph returned home from the war unharmed, allowing the business to be expanded in the following years, with a new shop section added. In addition to the retail business, which continued to operate under the name Abraham Strauss, a wholesale branch was established under the name Joseph Strauss. After the deaths of his parents (his mother Emilie in 1922 and his father Abraham in 1927), Joseph assumed sole management of the company.
In March 1924, he married the young Lilly Wertheim (*1903), daughter of the merchant Isaac Wertheim and his wife Frieda, née Wertheim, from Naumburg. Lilly and Joseph Strauss had three children in Hünfeld:

The merchant family Strauss was highly respected and well-regarded by both Jews and Christians alike. All the residents of the southern part of town shopped at the Strauss store. As a wholesaler, Joseph also supplied small shops in the surrounding villages. He purchased goods in bulk and stored them in his warehouse, where customers would come to collect their orders.
Mrs. Strauss handled all the office work and, during particularly busy times—such as in summer, when blueberries were being bought and sold—she also helped out in the shop. To ease her workload, a housemaid and occasionally a nanny were employed. There was always a saleswoman working in the store—first Marianne Winkler, and later, until 1938, Luise Bodesheim, “Joseph’s right hand,” who moved to Friesenhausen in the Rhön after her marriage and became Mrs. Breitung.
